Person Specification – Oppenheimer Impact Scholar in Conservation Governance

Essential Desirable
Attainments/ Qualifications
Higher education degree equivalent to a UK honours degree (2:1 or higher, or equivalent experience) in ecology, sustainable development, natural resource management, conservation, human or physical geography, environmental science, environmental social science, or a related subject. Master’s degree (or equivalent professional qualification) in ecology, sustainable development, natural resource management, conservation, physical geography, environmental science, or a related subject.
Skills and Understanding
Understanding of conservation challenges in Africa.

Basic quantitative skills and numeracy.

Basic skills to be able to undertake quantitative analysis of environmental data.

English language skills (written and verbal).

Digital skills (ability to use videoconferencing software such as Zoom/Teams/Skype/Slack).

Skills in presenting information in written and visual forms.

Familiarity with participatory methods, and/or models for community engagement in conservation.

Skills using geospatial data for environmental analysis (e.g., GIS)

 

Prior Experience
Experience working in conservation in Africa.

Experience and motivation to work independently.

Experience of stakeholder and/or community engagement.

Evidence of communicating science to diverse audiences.

Behavioural Characteristics
A passion to inform adaptive management options to have a positive impact in society.

Ability to work well, both individually and as part of a larger team.

Curiosity and ability to think logically.

Aptitude for problem solving.

A willingness to conduct fieldwork in remote locations.

Other requirements relevant to this role
Candidates must hold citizenship of an African Nation.

Candidates must be eligible to study in the United Kingdom and have the ability to move to the UK.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the Republic of Kenya and/or the Republic of Uganda.

A full driving licence, which is accepted in Kenya and Uganda.
